Volvo Trucks is 'complementing' its standard Remote Diagnostics telematics solution with the addition of optional fleet-management services provided by Telogis

Volvo adds optional Telogis solutions to connected-vehicle platform

July 16, 2014

Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) is partnering with Telogis to make that firm’s fleet-management solutions optionally available alongside the truck OEM’s standard Remote Diagnostics telematic service on its existing ”connected-vehicle platform.”

“We’re pleased to collaborate with Telogis to deliver tremendous value to motor carriers seeking flexibility and the robust information needed to fine-tune their operations,” said Göran Nyberg, president-- Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing.

“Leveraging the connectivity of our vehicles to facilitate fleet management services represents a breakthrough for fleet managers, who are no longer captive to hardware,” Nyberg continued.

“As part of our long-term strategic focus, we’ll look toward further integration of our vehicles with best-in-class fleet management solutions,” he added.

Queried by FleetOwner as to whether the agreement with Volvo was exclusive, a Telogis spokesperson replied that “this deal is not exclusive to Volvo Trucks. Telogis maintains a number of different OEM relationships, but the Telogis compliance, navigation and fleet management offerings with Volvo Trucks will be the first to launch in the heavy-duty trucking category.”

The integrated connected-vehicle hardware that comes standard-- on new Volvo trucks that are powered by Volvo engines— enables motor carriers to leverage Telogis’ ”best-in-class Fleet, Compliance and Navigation applications, while eliminating hardware purchases and installation costs traditionally associated with fleet management systems,” pointed out Magnus Koeck, VTNA’s vp— marketing & brand management, during a joint webinar held yesterday with Telogis to reveal the new offerings.

”Trucking companies run on fuel and on value-added data,” remarked Conal Deedy, VTNA’s director—commercial telematics services. He said that ”actionable information” furnished by the capabilities of the Telogis solutions will ”help motor carriers control costs, increase safety and hours-of-service compliance as well as improve customer service and operations.

”All this can now be done without the need for any additional in-vehicle hardware and the connectivty as well is provided for at the factory,” added Deedy. ”No installation is needed before taking delivery of a truck,” he emphasized, ”and adding the Telogis offerings can be financed with teh truck purchase.”

VTNA will offer three Telogis fleet management packages that the companies said have been  ”enhanced by the addition of Volvo-specific vehicle data, providing fleet managers and operators with an inside look at driver/vehicle performance and history (all of which are now available for order on new trucks):

  • Telogis Fleet for Volvo Trucks
  • Telogis Compliance & Navigation for Volvo Trucks
  • Bundle of the full suite of services in the Fleet and the Compliance & Navigation packages

All three packages can be ordered as of now on new trucks. In addition, VTNA said the Telogis services will become available during this year’s third quarter on ”the more than 60,000 Volvo trucks already equipped with Volvo’s connected-vehicle hardware.”

Kevin Moore, vp—global OEM automotives sales for Telogis, advised that truck buyers will access the Telogis packages via subscriptions that can run for one, three or five years.

Moore also noted that while no new hardware need be installed on the truck, a driver may bring into the cab any Apple- or Android-based device  to access Telogis on a screen.

Via Telogis Fleet for Volvo Trucks and the hardware built into all new Volvo-powered Volvo trucks, VTNA said  that ”customers can activate Telogis services over the air, delivering a reliable, scalable and comprehensive fleet management solution. Fleets gain insights to help improve operations, asset utilization and driver safety. Customers also benefit from viewing their entire fleet of vehicles and assets on one dashboard for all trucks in their fleet.”

VTNA said that by leveraging Telogis Compliance & Navigation for Volvo Trucks, for-hire and private fleets can eliminate paper logs and more easily manage and comply with such federal, state and local regs as those elated to Hours of Service (HOS) and Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR). In addition, this suite of ”delivers truck-specific, real-time road conditions and community-based navigation updates that help to maximize uptime and improve on-time arrivals.”

The truck OEM noted that the standard hardware on Volvo-powered Volvo trucks built for the U.S. and Canada also enables Volvo’s standanrd Remote Diagnostics solution, which provides proactive diagnostics and repair planning assistance.

”Remote Diagnostics has demonstrated a marked improvement in repair accuracy and efficiency, reducing the average diagnostic time at a service location by up to 70% and lowering the average time of repair by more than 20%,” stated the OEM. ”The service also helps improve parts availability and provides technicians at the repairing dealer with easy-to-read repair instructions before the truck arrives for service.”

“With increasingly complex compliance regulations and the need to more effectively manage safety, productivity and costs– telematics, compliance and navigation software are no longer a ‘nice to have’ – it’s now a ‘have to have,’” noted Susan Heystee, executive vp-- worldwide sales for Telogis.

“The ability to easily access mission-critical tools and information from the Telogis platform will transform the way Volvo Trucks’ customers do business,” she added.
