FTR reports highest dry van and refrigerated spot rates in years for late December

Last week, spot rates rose as expected, according to weekly reports from FTR Transportation Intelligence.

According to FTR, these are the highest rates for dry van and refrigerated equipment in several years. The firm noted that “refrigerated spot rates posted a large week-over-week gain and were the highest since February 2022. Dry van spot rates increased only modestly but once again were at their highest level since the beginning of 2023. Barring weather disruptions, van spot rates likely will decline in early January.”

Here is how rates and volumes changed across the three major spot market equipment types:

Dry van rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates rose just under 3 cents last week. Year over year, rates are up about 10%. Dry van loads increased 30.1%.

Refrigerated rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates increased over 27 cents last week. Rates were almost 23% higher than last year. Refrigerated loads rose 44.9%.

Flatbed rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates rose over 2 cents last week. Year over year, rates were up 5.5%. Flatbed loads rose 44.4%.
