Truckload carriers last month generously assisted the Wreaths Across America project (www.wreaths-across-america.org) to ensure that America's deceased veterans were recognized over the holiday season with evergreen wreaths laid at their gravesites in Arlington National Cemetery as well as in veterans' cemeteries in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
The project began in 1992 when Harrrington, ME-based Worcester Wreath Co. placed wreaths on the headstones of veterans whose remains were at rest in Arlington. For 2008, Worcester donated 18,000 wreaths and the rest were paid for by donors, including $500 provided by the Truckload Carriers Assn.
Baylor Trucking Inc. agreed to deliver 3,000 wreaths to the cemeteries in the Midwestern states and Barry Pottle, president & CEO of Bangor-based Pottle's Transportation, donated his time and equipment to drive a load of 5,400 wreaths for blanketing the Arlington graves. Theirs were just two of some 30 loads that were delivered to 350 different cemeteries.
