Mark McLean, a technician with FedEx Freight, was named TMCSuperTech grand champion at the recent National Technician Skills Competition for his technical prowess, demonstrated via hands-on and written testing. The competition is sponsored by the American Trucking Assns.’ Technology & Maintenance Council.
McLean was one of 129 techs who first took part in a day of qualifying testing. The top 112 scorers then competed in the day-long challenge, working their way through 14 hands-on skills stations that tested troubleshooting skills as well as general truck maintenance, electronic diagnostics applications and safety and environmental practices. Scores from an ASE written test were added to the skills scores to determine the top finishers.
Along with attaining the highest overall score, McLean also scored highest in two skills stations: wheel end and preventive maintenance inspection.
“While a tremendous amount of attention is paid to our industry’s drivers, and our industry’s driver shortage, we must not forget those technicians and mechanics who truly keep our industry rolling,” said ATA president & CEO Bill Graves.
