The Commercial Vehicle Systems group of Dana Corp has introduced the Dana Spicer SmartRide RN40 trailer suspension series, its lightest slider assembly to date with weight reductions of more than 200 pounds over previous models.

To ensure durability, Dana engineers created a 4¼"-wide bushing. The trailing arm was shape-optimized using Dana proprietary design software to identify weight savings openings, as well as including the use of high strength steel only where it is needed. The new design of the trailing arm also allows the shock absorber to be placed in a more vertical position to provide better ride quality.

Dana pioneered the use of 5¾" large-diameter axle (LDA) tubing, as opposed to the traditional 5" tubing, contributing to the product's integrity and 15% increase in bending stiffness.

All Dana Spicer SmartRide suspensions may be specified with an assortment of integrated options. Among the most popular are the Dana Spicer Low Maintenance System (LMS) wheel ends and the Dana Spicer Tire Inflation and Monitor System (TIMSTM). The LMS package also carries an extended five-year warranty. The patented Spicer TIMS provides improved tire life, improved safety, and improved fuel economy.

SmartRide suspensions may also be specified with key Bendix components, including double and single anchor-pin S-cam brakes, extended service and 8.625"-wide brake options, air disc brakes, ABS, air dryers, and valves.

With a gross tandem weight capacity rating of 40,000 pounds, the Dana Spicer SmartRide RN40 suspension is scheduled to begin series production during the fourth quarter of 2005.
