Chrysler Group is recalling nearly 250,000 Ram Trucks due to a tie-rod issue that could cause drivers to lose control of the vehicle. The recall affects a variety of model years, ranging from 2003-2011.

According to the recall notice, the “left tie rod ball stud may fracture,” occurring most often during low speed maneuvers, typically of those occurring in parking lots, when the driver is making a tight turn. If it breaks, drivers could experience a loss of control in the left front wheel.

The recall affects “certain” vehicles in the following classes:

• 2008-2011 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 4x4 built between Feb. 14, 2008, through Aug. 15, 2008

• 2008-2011 Dodge Ram 3500 cab chassis 4x2 built between Feb. 14, 2008, through Aug. 15, 2008

• 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 mega cab 4x4 built between Feb. 14, 2008, through Aug. 15, 2008

Affected customers can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit http://www.safercar.gov to determine if their vehicle is affected.

Dealers will inspect the vehicles and repair the left outer tie rod as necessary free of charge. Chrysler has not said when it will notify customers of the recall.
