Symbol, Descartes join in home-delivery project

Under a new marketing agreement, Symbol Technologies will integrate its handheld and onboard computing and wireless communications devices with Descartes DeliveryNet software for managing home delivery and field service fleets.A "mobile e-fulfillment solution," the new joint product will extend Descartes' route optimization, dispatch, and delivery management system to drivers and other field personnel.

Under a new marketing agreement, Symbol Technologies will integrate its handheld and onboard computing and wireless communications devices with Descartes DeliveryNet software for managing home delivery and field service fleets.

A "mobile e-fulfillment solution," the new joint product will extend Descartes' route optimization, dispatch, and delivery management system to drivers and other field personnel. Symbol mobile devices that will be integrated with the system include its SPT 1700, PPT 2700, and PDT 7500 operating on Palm OS, Windows CE, and DOS platforms.

Symbols' Mobile Gateway Plus will also be adapted for DeliveryNet, providing drivers with wireless communications over a variety of networks as well as GPS tracking.
