Package delivery company DHL is on track to complete a $7 million, 78,960-sq.-ft. service center two blocks south of O’Hare International Airport in Chicago in early 2007. The facility will handle local pickup, delivery and sorting.

This follows the September 2005 opening of a 70,000-sq.-ft. facility DHL on West Cermak Road serving the Chicago Loop with pickup and delivery services for financial, legal, and banking industries.

Carl Rodriguez, senior area vp of operations for DHL, noted that the company’s new O’Hare location will be equipped with conveyors and sorting systems to process a higher volume of customer shipments.

“The Chicago area has always been an important market for DHL, with a high density of customers ranging from major national accounts to small businesses,” he said. “Our new [airport] facility is also going to…position us for future customer growth in the area.”

Rodriguez added that the airport site will handle both domestic and international parcels as well as palletized, loose-load and container freight. The facility will offer a throughput capacity of 7,500 packages per hour and employ nearly 250 personnel when fully operational.
