This week in trucking: Telematics research, ICE eyes CDL fraud
Here are the headlines from this week in trucking:
ICE has a new tip line for CDL fraud
Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched an official tip line to report fraud involving commercial driver’s licenses and immigration. The official tip line uses the same phone number as ICE’s general tip line, 866-347-2423, which can have long wait times. It is also accessible through an online form.
A bill in Congress promises to crack down on chameleon carriers
Industry lobbying groups are excited about the REVOKE Act, a bill introduced to the House of Representatives that would try to prevent chameleon carriers from cycling through new U.S. Department of Transportation registrations to evade safety enforcement. The lawmakers behind the bill are also members of the Trucking Caucus launched in December 2025.
New bills like this have a very slim chance of becoming law: Roughly 5% of bills introduced in Congress survive the legislative process.
New research shows how fleets are using telematics
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) released a new report on the most important key performance indicators (KPIs) for telematics data in commercial transportation.
The report uses surveys of 111 motor carriers and six telematics technology providers. Some key findings of the report were:
The most important operational data is cost per mile, and 73% of carriers reported using that metric. The most important safety KPIs were critical events, speeding, risky behavior, and hard braking. About 52% of fleets dispatched through their transportation management system, while 21% of fleets dispatched through cell phone communications.
Spot market rates increased ahead of Labor Day
Last week’s average broker-posted spot rate increased over 9 cents to $3.22 per mile, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence, in line with seasonal expectations for a pre-Labor Day buzz. Spot rates increased across all three equipment types but were strongest for refrigerated and dry van loads. This was the first substantial rate increase in about eight weeks, and rates were up about 39% year over year.
In fuel this week, diesel prices are rising quickly
The national average on-highway diesel price jumped to $5.97 per gallon, according to weekly data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and $5.98 per gallon, according to the latest data from AAA. Diesel prices surpassed their record 2022 pricing from the Russia-Ukraine war. The Iran War continues.
