Fontana: Apprenticeship programs help you grow your own techs

A federal grant is expanding technician apprenticeship programs, helping fleets address technician shortages and retention.

Key Highlights

  • A DoL federal grant incentivizes fleets and shops to participate in registered apprenticeship programs.
  • Apprentices gain practical experience under mentorship, boosting confidence and ensuring they learn company-specific procedures and policies from the start.
  • Offering apprenticeships can increase loyalty and reduce turnover.
  • The 'Apprenticeship-in-a-Box' toolkit provides step-by-step guidance for establishing in-house apprenticeship programs.

I was interested to learn about the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Foundation’s $25 million federal grant for technician apprenticeship programs.

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded the grant to help increase registered apprenticeships across several areas, including commercial vehicle service technicians. Fleets, dealers and service shops that participate in registered apprenticeship programs are eligible for $3,500 for each apprentice they hire. There are some time parameters for technician retention.

Apprenticeship programs help inexperienced technicians gain hands-on experience in addition to classroom learning, which can boost confidence in their abilities to handle maintenance and repair procedures successfully. An apprenticeship program pairs a new technician with an experienced tech who serves as a mentor and oversees the apprentice's work.

Offering an apprenticeship allows you to demonstrate your commitment to learning and growth for your employees. They also allow you to begin familiarizing new employees with your corporate culture, procedures, and policies so that, from the very beginning, they will be completing tasks in the manner you prefer.

Workers benefit from apprenticeship programs by being paid while they learn on the job. They receive a skills-based education that better prepares them for their career with your fleet.

For the fleet, an apprenticeship program can be a powerful retention tool because the apprentice will see that you are willing to invest in them and help them develop the skills they need. The commitment you make to an apprentice can increase their loyalty to your operation.

If you don’t already have an existing registered apprenticeship program, you can use the ASE Foundation’s “Apprenticeship-in-a-Box” toolkit. This includes resources that provide step-by-step guidance for building an in-house apprenticeship program.

The trucking industry seems to have a perennial technician shortage. As fleets move into the future, operating some trucks on fuels other than diesel, the need for more technicians with specialized skills will likely grow. A technician apprenticeship program gives you a supply of in-house talent that can be trained to work on the vehicles of today and tomorrow.
